Psycho-Path - The Ass-Soul of Psycho-Path

psychopathWithout question, Psycho-Path from Slovenia win both this month’s imaginary awards for worst album title AND artwork. What the??? If this wasn’t out on the usually interesting Moonlee Records I would have been turned off completely, and not because it’s “shocking”,  "controversial" or whatever, but plain hideous. That said, I would have been surprised if the music had been as awful, after all Moonlee has released albums by such likeable bands as Don’t Mess With Texas and Analena.
And sure enough, this turns out to be a pretty interesting and definitely mature indierock album. Central to this are the singer’s impressive vocal range and means of expression that are reminiscent to the style of, say, Joan Jett or Chrissie Hynde. Take the fourth song, for example, that lives exclusively on her voice, a guitar and some subtle bleeps until after over 5 minutes the drums kick in. The majority of the songs, though, are more straight-forward rock of the old-fashioned kind with a psychedelic touch. Throughout, it is obvious that the band has been playing for a long time, and in fact this is their fifth album. The studio production is just as sophisticated as the songwriting. So here’s the dilemma: from a punk point of view this is overproduced, boring rock music, while in a more neutral way you’ll have to admit that it’s pretty much flawless. Personally, Psycho-Path leave me cold but they sound as if the opinion uttered in a small d.i.y. webzine won’t matter too much.
